Training is essential preparation for providing the strength and endurance needed for boxing. Success in competition is directly proportionate to the amount of effort that is put into training. Training should be conducted at a rapid pace to train the body, particularly the cardiovascular system, for quick, explosive action. Currently in amateur boxing, bouts are four rounds long which does not leave time for “feeling out” your opponent or pacing yourself. A boxer should train for the same duration in which he is going to compete. If you are a novice boxer [an athlete who has less than 10 bouts], you should be working on a two minute clock and working at 100% effort. Open boxers box three minutes. All too often a novice boxer working three minute rounds conditions his body to work at 80% of its physical potential. Unfortunately, when 100% is needed in competition, he is not prepared for it. The key is to train at the same duration as competition and at 100% intensity. Most gyms are open only three nights a week which is adequate and keeps the coach and boxers from getting burned out. To complement the gym work, an aspiring champion must workout two or three additional days of the week. Your better, more dedicated boxers should be shadowboxing, and running when they are not working in the gym.

An important expression or term used to describe a boxers training regimen is sport specific. When boxers train for a fight everything they do in the gym has to reflect what might happen in the ring. The days of dancing around and hitting the heavy bag are gone. In the ring there is going to be a battle. In the gym you’d better train to be ready for that battle. Sport specific training mimics the movements and combinations that you would perform in the actual fight. Before we get started on the sport specific training will cover Strength training which is probably the most important element of getting ready for any battle.
The most important component to increase the athletic performance of a boxer is strength training. In the past boxing coaches and trainers didn’t have anything to do with strength training. Boxing coaches thought that lifting heavy weights would cause boxers to become bulky and muscle bound. The coaches thought that lifting weights would slow the boxer’s performance.
Today strength training has been proven to increase athletic performance. Boxers that incorporate strength training into their programs tend to have fewer injuries. Strength training strengthens your tendons, and ligaments as well as your muscles. Strength training will increase your speed, agility, and your power. The difference between the winner and a loser of a match can be associated with who is stronger, faster, and more powerful.
Sports Nutrition Basics from Training to Competition.doc
Sports nutrition can be a very complicated topic for those of us seeking a balanced way to eat healthy, satisfying and quick meals that also help us achieve peak athletic performance. In order to simplify the role of nutrition and hydration for sports performance, it's often easier to break it down into phases.
Here is an example of our boxing training program. The Jungle Boxing Team is our Colorado amateur boxing team which is the first amateur boxing team that we established.
