Amateur boxing is a very positive sport as well as a terrific way to combat juvenile delinquency. It is completely different from professional boxing in its goals, objectives, scoring and equipment.
Amateur boxing can be a source of excellent conditioning for the high school athlete during the off-season. It also provides an option for the youngster who is not involved in school sports programs or does not desire to participate in team sports.
Amateur boxing can also provide a young person with the opportunity to satisfy the basic human need for recognition in a positive manner. All too often this need is met through delinquent behavior.
In amateur boxing, points are scored by landing clean blows, regardless of their power. A power punch that knocks an opponent down scores the same as a left jab. Consequently, a boxer’s goal should be to out box his opponent by landing numerous clean, effective blows rather than going for the knockout that may not happen.
When properly coached and supervised, amateur boxing can be an extremely fulfilling and beneficial experience for young people. It can be used as a vehicle to instruct in sportsmanship, values of conditioning, positive release of frustrations and energies, in addition to building self-confidence and
We will help create well-respected, productive members of society. We will help the youth in our community build self-respect and improve self-esteem. We will help the youth in our community learn that they are in control of their future. It is our goal to build self-confidence. To give the kids and young adults skills that will give them that confidence to handle life’s obstacles as they come. Self control and consideration of others is necessary. We want your kids to be successful out in the Jungle of the real world as much as you do.
Sociologist Herber Spencer (1820-1903) applied a theory to the operation of society, agreeing that society is a "Jungle" with the "Fittest" people rising to the top and the weak gradually sinking to miserable poverty.
John D Rockefeller (1839-1937) who made a vast fortune building the oil industry, recited Spencer's "social gospel" to young children in Sunday School (John J Macionis ,Sociology tenth edition).
It is our desire to help mold these "Fit" individuals (Our Youth ) for society. We need to uncompromisingly stand in the gap to assist our next generation of parents, workers, leaders, and citizens become positive participants in the decision-making that affects their lives and their communities.

Conditioning is a very important part of a successful boxing program. We help our athlete develop great physical conditioning, and great boxing technique and mechanics. We have created a strong conditioning program for our athletes. We teach boxing basics and as you progress we will instruct in the higher more detailed aspects of boxing strategy and technique. From the very first day you will need to come to the boxing gym everyday fully prepared. You will need to be focused and ready to work as soon as you step into the gym. You will need to bring all your equipment to practice everyday. Here is a diagram of some of the boxing equipment you will need to have with you everyday.

The most important pieces of equipment that you need right away will be of course boxing gloves, and hand wraps. You should be ready to start using the jump rope with in two weeks. You will need to carry you equipment in a medium sized gym bag. You will need a filled water bottle and towel for your training sessions. In the fall and winter season you will need a jacket and something to cover your head when you leave the gym. Be sure to "wear" comfortable sneakers or boxing shoes. ( I used the were/wear in the picture above ). You will need you protective equipment when you start sparring. Our gym location is right around the corner from the Charlotte Boxing Academy so we train and spar with that team quite a bit.
TEACH YOUR BOXERS THE FOUR C’S OF AMATEUR BOXING: Coachability: A boxer must have the mental discipline to take instruction that he receives and incorporate it into his boxing style. Otherwise, he will never improve.
Conditioning:It is impossible to learn if a boxer is too tired to concentrate on new techniques. Most amateur bouts are won and lost due to conditioning.
Concentration:If a boxer has the ability to block out everything and concentrate on the task at hand, he will improve rapidly.
Champion:If a boxer is coachable, in condition and concentrates on his boxing, he will be a champion.
The objective of the Gloves Not Guns program is to attract and involve more young people in the sport of Amateur Boxing and provide positive choices for youth which will then have a positive effect on the community. We want to change the lives of participants and youth for the better.
